The Massif Central is a mountainous region in the centre of France, rough and rugged, and primarily rural. It is roughly equivalent to the administrative region of Auvergne, which includes the departements of Allier, Cantal, Puy de Dome, and Haute-Loire
The Auvergne is sparsely populated by French standards and contains two large regional parks - the Parc Naturel Regional des Volcans d'Auvergne and the Parc Naturel du Livradois-Forez.
Little known outside of France, the Auvergne is a popular location for outdoor pursuits such as walking, mountain biking, hang-gliding,and - in winter - downhill and cross-country skiing.
The major ski stations are at Super Besse, a purpose-built resort near the pretty town of Besse et Saint-Anastaise, and above the spa town of Le Mont Dore. These two stations are now linked, creating the Sancy ski area.
