Cloud seeding

Cloud seeding is the process of creating more ice crystals in clouds. Silver iodide is the primary seeding agent, dispensed over a butane flame.

Predictions estimate the technique could cause a rise of up to 10% of total snowfall in the Australian Alpine region.

Not surprisingly, Australian hydro-electric generating companies have been experimenting with cloud seeding for many years, so far with disappointing results. Hydro Tasmania maintains up to date links for Australian cloud seeding reports. Go to http://www.hydro.com.au/home/ and type 'cloud seeding' in the search box.
