Overview 

Smallish village located on the northern side of the Ski Welt - the largest connected ski area in Austria. The village is of traditional Austrian design with a small centre and lots of outlying areas that are reachable by bus. The Wilder Kaiser mountain range to the north is one of the most spectacular in Europe.

App. 120km from Munich in the Austrian Tyrol

• HUGE ski area
• Great lift system
• Extensive snow making
• Cute village
• Great for children and beginners

Cons

• Low elevation often means poor snow
• Some accommodation is a long way from the lifts
• Limited nightlife
• Some short runs
• Very little to please advanced skiers/boarders

Getting There

Fly into Munich, train to Kufstein, bus to Ellmau. Public transport in the area is very reliable and safe

There are some large hotels in the village centre, with pensions spread throughout the village

Activities

Rhodeling 

Get a taxi to the top of the mountain, have a meal and plenty of schnapps at one of the restaurants up there, jump on your rhodel (wooden sled with steel 'blades') and slide all the way back to the village on the purpose built 'rhodelbahn'. Great fun!

Dining

There are small cafes and traditional restaurants scattered around the village. The tiny Buckingerstuberl at the base of the beginner area serves the best weiner schnitzel mit dumplings und saurkraut in the world.

Beginner Areas

There is a large beginner area right next to the village.

Groomed Runs

Groomed runs are everywhere. The runs down the Hartkaiser back into Ellmau are long and great fun.

Off Piste

There is some quality off piste terrain below the gondola at Scheffau. From the top of the Hohe Salve there is a steep area back towards Soll and Scheffau. You can hire guides to take you off piste from Scheffau down to the village of Soll.
