Location
SOunkyou, central Hokkaido, just north of Asahikawa and 2 hours away from Furano.
Pros
Amazing steep terrain and the best snow as it is located in central Hokkaido. Nice very small town and great onsen to stay in.
Cons
Not enough for a long stay. Not enough of a lot of things, but probably the best place in Japan when it is on.

Getting There
get a bus or a train ending up in Sounkyou. You can usually get there through Asahikawa easily. Driving is easy and simple in Japan so rent-a-car is a good option if you want to see a number of the smaller and less well known ski areas.

Dining
Most dining is in the hotels although there are a few good restaurants in the town.

Some small bars and entertainment but the best entertainment is in the onsen/ hot spring hotels.

Children
The top can be skied by children. The Sounkyou town has one of the best festivals in Hokkaido with the Ice Festival. Amazing and everyone should see it.

Beginner Areas
The top under the pair lift is suitable for beginners.
Groomed Runs
There are two courses between the trees at the top under the pair lift for beginners and intermediates.
Off Piste
Hike to the peak for some of the best skiing and riding in Japan. Under the cable car from the top has some insane and steep tree skiing back to the base. This is not for avergae skiers as the top is steep. The bottom traverses around for another descent to the cable car base.
Out of Bounds
There is very little patrol here, just one dude in a fluro top. If you do go out of bounds here, be VERY careful as it is steep and big.

Bumps
Very, very big ones. These are called mountains. On these we ski extremely good powder. There is no where near enough guests at this resort to get any bumps formed. I have never crossed a track here.

Under the ropeway in the trees. Also off the pair if the wind is not blowing.
Snowplay
No, it is illegal to play with snow at Kurodake. You can and will be arrested for this offence. Think how the snow would feel?
Weather
Great weather although it does get fairly cold.
