- Overview
Today Lech is a cosmopolitan resort which attracts the great, the good and the rich from all over the world, as well as just normal ski fans. Indeed it's one of the few key Austrian winter draws for the jet set. Located in beautiful Alpine scenery it’s a buzzing resort with plenty going on pretty well around the clock and a well laid out, modern lift system to boot.
The most important thing to realise about Lech is that it is expensive. It is a ski rseort that you go to if you are more than happy skiing 1 day a week and spending the rest of the time shopping. We didn't know this when we got there but the snow cover was excellent and more was expected so we booked into the youth hostel which was also quite expensive( I think $40 a night dinner and breakfast).

Location
Lech is located in the Arlberg region of Austria, near St. Anton. About 200 km from Zurich, the nearest international airport. Travel time is about 3.5 hours.
Pros
The hot gluevine is realy strong and a great way to hang out on the main street during apres ski, with at least 500 other fun lovers, listening to live bands, or modern music, dancing in the street or just hangin out! First resort to have the chairlifts heated!
Cons
Book your acomidation well before you go. It's along way from Australia but once your there You wont want to go. two weeks minimum.

Planning
Getting There
From Sydney Australia I timed it, 31 hrs including syd to singapore, singapore to Zurich airport, airport train to central station, central station to the mountains, (Forgot the name of the station) station to bus, bus to Lech. But it was all pretty smooth. Probably could have cut out 4 hrs with a direct flight.
Accommodation
On Mountain
Muntanella is a wonderful family owned pension in the heart of Oberlech. The main building is 500ms from the cable car station and is easily accessible via the village's tunnel system. Muntanella also owns appartments in a second building further across the hill. Prices are great and the staff are friendly, but without a doubt the location is the best part of staying at Muntanella.
Off Mountain
I hate cigarette smoke, and like a clean inexpensive homely place to stay. The "Haus Sonnheim" run by Rosie Beiser is a fantastic home/private house to stay.$60 aus per night including big breakfast, is dirt cheep for Austria. Super friendly about 6 good sized bedrooms with t.v.,telephone,shower,comfy beds, cleaned daily, 3 minutes out of town on a very regular free bus, or 10 mins easy walk. I don't think they are on E.mail but do have a fax and speak enough english to get by.
Lift Tickets
Lech is part of the Arlberg ski area and uses the Arlberg Card. This is an electronic ticket with flexible pricing options and allows full access to all the resorts in the Arlberg reigon.
Ski School
there are two main ski schools, you'll choose depending on where you are staying: Lech (down the valley) or Oberlech (middle station). Kids ski school best is Skischule Lech (down in the village), because of its facilities and maybe the best kids ski school in austria, for others it is not a big matter. Be aware if you need a guide because no avalailable at high season (february, christmas, eastern week)
Equipment Hire
no matter where you rent, same price (expensive!) and same quality (very good). Vip or normal equipment, there is a small diference in the price
Resort Facilities
Getting Around
Trains run to St Anton reguarly from Innsbruck and buses are available from there.
Lift Network
Lech is a popular ski resort among the rich, famous and Royal, therefore it has a lift network fit for a King. The lift system is constantly upgraded and was home to the worlds first heated chair lift, The Kreigerhorn is a 6 seat, hooded, padded, heated chair. Many of the larger lifts have hoods and the new 8 seater is also padded.

Activities
- Rodelbahn
The Oberlech - Lech Rodelbahn is a fully floodlit tobbogan run which is maintained daily and is open between 10am and 9pm. The 1.2km run is great fun for all ages as it winds through the forest under the bergbahn.
Dining

Bars & Entertainment
The nightlife was better than any other resort i've been to with 6 different nightclubs, 7days till 3am to 5am. The people are cool but smoke too much. Shnapps is dirt cheep in the supermarkets.

Weather
Febuary to mid march, I was lucky I had 22 snow days out of 40 most during the night. When the sun comes out it's unreal. Coldest day temp was -12c no wind average was -4c. night average was -8c down to minus 15c no wind. The sun is out till 5.30pm and because of the angle of the mountain to the sun you don't ski in the shaddows in the afternoon.
The Arlberg region that Lech is a part of gets some of the most if not the most snow in Austria so it shouldn't be a problem if you go at the right time. I find mid to late January to be the best as it is almost the best for snow and before the school holiday rush. If it is snowing while you are there it is the best because I think three quarters of the population only skis in bright sunlight so there will be no queues and endless amounts of powder.
