Overview 

Schladming is one of the main towns in the Enns valley which has access to several ski areas. It has direct access to the Planai area as well as good access to the areas of Hauser Kaibling, Hochwurzen & Reiteralm via ski link lifts or shuttle bus. Access also to the Dachstein glacier by shuttle bus. It is also part of the large Ski Amade region. Schladming hosted the Ski world championships in 1982 and will host it again in 2013.

It has excellent modern facilities including comfortable 8 seater gondolas, many quad chairs and also an 8 seater chair. The numerous on mountain huts also make it a very civilised experience. It has always been known for the wide Autobahn type pistes which are now even wider. The differemt mountains are also all covered under a single ski pass.

Schladming is located in the Enns valley in the west of the Austrian province of Styria (Steiermark).

Planning

Getting There

Schladming is a major stop on the rail line between Graz and Salzburg. By train it is about 2.5 hrs from Graz or 1.5 hrs from Salzburg. From Vienna about 3.5-4.5 hrs via Leoben and from Munich about 3.5-4 hrs via Salzburg.

Accommodation

There is quite a range of accomodation from hotels, apartments & pensions to suit most. Most of these will be in the towns in the valley generally with a fairly short walk either to a lift or a shuttle bus stop. There are also hotels & apartments on the mountain in the Rohrmoos area.

Lift Tickets

There are a variety of single ride, day, multi day and season ski tickets. Multi day passes are valid for the Ski Amade region. eg. (2011 prices) Peak season - day ticket €43, 5 days out of 7 pass €205.

Ski School

There are a number of ski schools with offices in town as well as on the mountain including Hopl, Tritscher & Blue Tomato.

Equipment Hire

There are several places to hire gear including Intersport in the Planet Planai building at the base of the Planai and in town, Charly Kahrs, Tritschers in town.

Getting Around

There are number of different ski shuttle buses which operate regularly between the various mountain base stations (Planai, Haus, Rohrmoos, Hochwurzen, Reireralm and also Dachstein glacier. There are also regular town buses. The main part of Schladming is fairly compact so easy to walk around, although the railway station is some distance from the town centre and the Planet Planai base station so will need a taxi.

Parking

There is a multi level car park by Planet Planai. In preparation for the 2013 Worlkd Ski Championships some underground car parks are also being built.

Activities

There is a sled run on Hochwurzen.

Dining

There is a good range of restaurants in town with local specialties as well as Pizza, Mexican, Chinese & Indian. There is also an amazing number mountain 'huts', most with outdoor terraces and table service. You can find at the bottom and / or top of most lift.

Bars & Entertainment

This is Austria so there are always good Apre ski bars. The on mountain huts will have some during the day. There is the huge Tenna bar at the base of the Planai. Stop there at the end of the day and watch others ski down the Planai Zielhang. Charly Kahrs bar across the road. A few more bars in and around the pedestrian mall.

Shopping

Schladming is a resonable size town so there are quite a few shops in and near the pedestrian mall. If you want soemthing more extensive you can head into Salzburg about 1.5 hrs away.

Children

There is an area specifically set aside for kids.
