Overview

Virtually nothing compares to the size of Snowmass: The second largest ski area in the US, a whopping 36 Disneylands could fit within its boundaries. And that’s not all. Snowmass has nearly 4500 feet of vertical rise---the equivalent of four Eiffel Towers! Besides its massive size and fantastic features—three terrain parks, a super pipe and beginner pipe—Snowmass, with its amazing variety, is a great place for family skiing and family fun. With so many trails and so many ski and non-ski options, like the Tree House Kid’s Adventure Center and world class spas and shopping, everyone in the family is sure to find a trail, a run, a park, a spa, a boutique or shop made just for them. Plus, with Aspen Highlands, Buttermilk, and Aspen Mountain are a hop, skip, and a jump away, you’ll never run out of new places to ski and board. Summers are full of great Rocky Mountain fun with gold medal fishing, hiking, biking, camping, golf, kids camps, music and festivals. No matter what time of year you visit, Snowmass offers of smorgasbord of outdoor fun, food and friendly people.

Planning

Getting There

3 hrs. west of Denver, local airport is Aspen. Shuttle service available to Ajax (Aspen Mountain), Buttermilk, or Aspen Highlands. Current FAA regs prevent flights to and from Aspen in winds of more than 10 mph. Fortunately winds this strong are rare in an alpine environment ... not. If you plan to fly, plan to wait. Eagle airport or Colorado Springs are alternatives, or bite the bullet and take a shuttle down to Denver.

Accommodation

On Mountain

Huge volume of ski-in condos available along Fanny Hill beginner slope. Also full range of hotel services. Access to lodging is via Snowmelt drive which is steep, but is actually heated eliminating worries about access during dumps.

Off Mountain

14,303 pillows within a 10-mile radius. For more information, please call Stay Aspen Snowmass at 970-925-9000 or 888-649-5985 (95% ski-in/ski-out).

Ski School

Best ski school for small children anywhere! Private lessons are more for the rich and famous designer set than serious skiers. As an advance skier, I took a private lesson and the instructor kept suggesting that instead of skiing we take a long lunch at Gwyn's High Alpine and drink expensive wine!
