Location

Tiffindell is in the Eastern Cape on the border with Lesotho. The resort is on the slopes of Ben McDhui in the southern Drakensburg Mountains.

Pros

The only ski area in South Africa. The whole resort is covered by snow making.

Cons

Modest natural snow fall. Limited ski area. No advanced ski runs.

Planning

Getting There

From Johannesburg the best route to take is via Bloemfontein, Aliwal North, Lady Grey and Barkly East. The distance is 817 km and the trip takes about 9 hours.

From Cape Town go to Colesberg and then Aliwal North, and from Durban or East London to Elliot then Barkly East. From Barkly East head to Rhodes Village and then Tiffindell. The distance is 1177 km in about 13 hours.

Lift Tickets

Prices vary between R412 in the low season to R589 in peak season for a daily package including resort entry and equipment hire. Discounts are available for those with their own equipment. Children aged 10 and under receive a 25% discount on the adult price.

Ski School

Group and private lessons are available. A R260 beginner ski or snowboard course is compulsory for first timers.

Parking

Parking is available at the resort. Alternately visitors may park at Wartrail or Rhodes and catch a shuttle (R200 return) and avoid the last section of gravel road

Ice Station 2720 is the highest pub on the continent. Yeti's Retreat is a bar overlooking the ski slope.

There is a 60 metre long beginner area.

Groomed Runs

The main 1 km long ski run is imaginatively titled The Main Slope. Not all of it may be open for the full ski season.

Occasionally there is enough natural snow fall to allow experienced skiers to venture further afield.

Not really. The whole slope is groomed regularly.
