Overview 

Axamer Lizum was purpose built for the 1964 Winter Olympic Games. The ski area suits all standards but there is no resort as such, with most skiers staying in beautiful Innsbruck, although there is a four star slopeside hotel. The traditional and picturesque village of Axams, located on a sunny plateau above the Inn valley but below the ski area, can be skied back down to from the Axamer Lizum ski area. There is also a beginners surface lift in the village.

Location

Axamer Lizum is located above the town of Axams, which is 9km from Innsbruck.

Pros

The resort has a great atmosphere and some good long cruising runs. Innsbruck is a great place to visit with a lot to offer to a non-skier.

Cons

You wouldn't plan an overseas trip simply to go here. It doesn't have a reputation as a powder resort or any real steeps for the expert skiers.

Getting There

If travelling within Europe, take the train if possible - you will not need a car in Innsbruck. If you do travel by car, there are motorways leading to Innsbruck, but beware the horrendous toll on the Europabrücke if coming from Italy. There is an airport in Innsbruck, but I believe it is only for domestic connections.

I stayed in a pension attached to a youth hostel in Innsbruck, cost about A$40 per head per night. There is plenty of accommodation available in Innsbruck with free buses to the resort. There is also accommodation available in the towns on the plateau below the resort (eg. Axams) also with a bus link. The atmosphere of Innsbruck seems to be worth the extra entertainment, however, and is probably also cheaper.

Lifts

The main lift on the mountain is the special Olympic tramway. Despite the crowds, this is a much faster way to the top than the chairlifts. There are some new chairlifts on the mountain, but still some T-bars, which are virtually self-loading as the attendants don't help. At the time there was one half-pipe adjacent to the beginner T-bars.

Apres ski starts at 3pm, although the drinking starts at lunch-time. Places to go are the bar half-way down the Women's Downhill run and the gazebo at the carpark. There is no nightlife at the resort, as there is only one hotel, however there is more than sufficient in Innsbruck.

Weather

The snow should be fairly reliable especially at the top of the mountains. The high traffic areas at the bottom get bare - there was no snowmaking at the time but this may have changed. I had a week of clear weather, but this is not guaranteed. One day I was there the temperature was -18 at the base and -24 at the top - my feet froze in their boots. Generally conditions are much milder than this.
