Overview

PLEASE EDIT

Location

Pros

The closest ski resort to Melbourne. A family-friendly resort. Perfect to 'experience' snow. One of the most-extensive cross-country trail networks in the world.

Cons

Because of its low altitude, snow can be marginal in poor years, and at the start and end of a season. However, Lake Mountain has a reputation as a spring mountain, so don't discount skiing there until well into October in a good year.

Planning

PLEASE NOTE: ALTHOUGH MUCH OF LAKE MOUNTAIN WAS BADLY AFFECTED BY THE BUSHFIRES, IT WILL OPEN FOR 2009. THE MAIN BUILDING REMAINS INTACT, AND TEMPORARY BUILDINGS WILL BE BROUGHT IN FOR TOILETS, FAST FOOD, AND SKI PATROL.

Getting There

About 1.5 hours or 120 kilometres from Melbourne, via Healesville, Narbethong, Marysville.

Accommodation

On Mountain

There is no on mountain accommodation during the winter.

Off Mountain

Due to the 2009 bushfires, there is very little accommodation, expected to be available in Marysville. Try booking with the Tower Motel, Crossways or Delderfield. Accommodation is available in Narbethong at the Black Spur Inn, the Black Spur Caravan Park, Woodlands and Chestnut Glade, or Silverstream in Buxton.

Lift Tickets

Trail fees are applicable to skiers and snow-shoers. The trail system is inaccessible to sight-seers during the winter unless they don skis or snow shoes. Trail tickets can be bought on mountain or at selected ski hires off mountain. In 2008, trail fees are $12 (adults) and $6 (children)

Ski School

A well-staffed ski school is located on the mountain and lesson are recommended for all beginners and others as their ability progresses.

Equipment Hire

There is only one off-mountain ski hire (Mystic Mountains Ski Hire in Narbethong) that wasn't destroyed by the bushfires. 3 of the Marysville ski hires (Lake Mountain Ski Hire, Cross Country Ski Hire and Marysville Ski Centre) plan to operate out of temporary buildings in Marysville. Action Ski Hire and Narbethong Ski Hire are not planning to operate in 2009. Some older gear may be available from the roadhouse in Narbethong. The ski hire on the mountain is the most expensive way of doing it but offers the advantage of being on mountain.

Resort Facilities

Getting Around

All the facilities are easily accessible on foot (other than the ski trails)

Parking

Get there before about 9am on weekends if you want to park at Gerratys. Otherwise you can expect to park at a lower car park and take the complimentary shuttle bus up to Gerratys.

Activities

CROSS COUNTRY SKIING

Classic and skate skiing on groomed trails. Lessons strongly recommended for beginners

SNOW SHOEING

Don a pair of snow shoes and some poles and explore the winter wonderland that is Lake Mountain. No experience necessary

Lake Mountain has a licensed bistro and a take away food shop. Or, you can bring your own picnic lunch.

Bars & Entertainment

The bar in the bistro overlooks the main toboggan run. The bar and bistro are only open during the daytime.
