Perisher has the most lifts and covers the largest area of any Australian resort. It is an amalgamation of four separate but interconnected ski areas: Perisher, Smiggin Holes, Blue Cow and Guthega, navigable by skiers and boarders can ski and board from one end to the other, assuming adequate snow cover. In early and late seasons and in bad seasons, the interconnections do not always have snow on them. Perisher is a huge resort and can be skied all day without having to catch the same lift twice. In 2008 and 2009, more summer snowmaking is being installed, particularly from the Midstation of the Forester Quad down Happy Valley and then up Towers (on Mt Perisher). A village plan is subject to government approval and may take years to start.

2009 name change

For the 2009 season, resort managment changed the name of Perisher Blue to just Perisher. Along with the name change is a new logo and identity to reflect the amalgam of Smiggin Holes, Guthega, Blue Cow and Perisher. The name Perisher Blue had been in use since the early 1990s, when Perisher and Blue Cow officially merged.

Location

Snowy Mountains in south-eastern Australia, about 500 km from Sydney and about 250 km inland.

Pros

  • Higher base than other Australian resorts, which means it holds snow better in marginal seasons and late season.
  • The place is big enough that, with a bit of thought and local knowledge, you can usually find a sheltered corner.
  • The place is so big that you can always find an uncrowded spot.
  • Friendly-family atmosphere.
  • Has the best terrian parks and superpipe in Australia.

Cons

  • Short runs.
  • Takes a bit of local knowledge to get around efficiently.
  • Even with local knowledge there are some flat bits, which makes things a bit tough for boarders, who tend to like the chairs and terrain at Blue Cow best.
  • Limited nightlife and a geographically dispersed village can involve cross-snow walking. The new village development should improve this.
  • Limited ski in/out accommodation, and some places are a long way from the lifts. There is oversnow transport to help you get around, but this costs extra.

Driving
Perisher is about 500 km and 5.5 to 6 hours drive from Sydney, and about 2.5 hours drive from Canberra. From Sydney, the road as far as Canberra is dual carriageway, and after Canberra is a good road with frequent overtaking lanes.
Follow the Hume and Federal Highways to Canberra, then the Monaro Highway to Cooma and Jindabyne. About 5 km past Jindabyne there is a left turn onto the Alpine Way. This turn is signposted Thredbo and the Skitube. If you want to drive to Perisher drive straight ahead at this intersection. If you are looking for the Skitube turn left.

If you are traveling from Victoria, get to Albury then head to Khancoban via Tallangatta and across the Alpine Way via Thredbo. You will need to carry chains if you are driving the Alpine Way in winter. An alternative that may be faster, and which does not have the problem of possible snow on Dead Horse Gap is to travel through Gippsland to Cann Valley, and then following the Cann Valley Way to Jindabyne.
Whether you choose the Skitube or drive for day visits (ignoring road and weather conditions) depends on how many people are travelling. The Skitube is a per person rate, whereas park entry is per car. If one person is travelling the tube is cheaper. For 2 or more driving is cheaper.
Flying
Sorry, out of luck this year due to pilot shortage. Nearest place you can fly to is Canberra.
Bus
Several bus companies offer tours to Perisher from Sydney and Canberra.

Accommodation

On mountain

There are many hotels, commercial and club lodges, details on the hotels and commercial lodges are on Perisher's website plus links to their booking service. Many of these commercial lodges offer special prices and packages, worth a look or call the Perisher Snow Holidays reservations team on 1300 655 811. Much of the on mountain accommodation is club lodges, which have varying policies on outsiders staying there, and varying levels of service from self-catering to fully catered. Information on the club lodges can generally be found on their websites. for example [1] There is not a lot of accommodation that is ski in/ski out. Much of Perisher requires a walk or cat ride to get to the lifts. The only self contained apartments are in The Stables development at Perisher.

Off mountain

Many people stay in Jindabyne, a town about 30 minutes' drive away (assuming good road conditions and no traffic). Or you can use the Skitube which takes about the same length of time if you get your connections right. Jindabyne has the full gamut of accommodation types from caravans to resort style hotels.

There are also a few places in the Thredbo Valley along the road to Thredbo. The bottom terminal of the Skitube is along this road, so these places have convenient access.

There is a camping area at Sawpit Creek on the road up to Perisher. It has some cabins and tent sites. There is also a motel at Wilsons Valley and Sponars Hotel, just below Smiggins.

If you are doing things on the ultra cheap, there are caravan parks and camping areas in Jindabyne, as well as the Sawpit Creek operation on the road to Perisher. They have civilised things like hot showers, but also have fees. There are recognised free camping areas at Island Bend on the way to Guthega and at Thredbo Diggings and Ngarigo on the Alpine Way between the park entrance and Thredbo. These have pit toilets and fireplaces, but little else in the way of facilities.

Lift tickets

The usual selectiion of single, multiday, children's and beginner tickets. You can also get combined lift and Skitube tickets. Travel on the Skitube between Perisher and Blue Cow is included in an ordinary lift ticket.

If you buy a 5 day Monday start ticket on Sunday you can ski Sunday afternoon free.

In 2009 Perisher are offering a Perisher Card, which gives discounts here and there. With offers like this it is always worth doing some sums to see how the discounts pan out for your anticipated use.

Snow sports school

Perisher has an large ski and boarding school. They are particularly good with children. The under sixes have an excellent, purpose designed centre on the lower level of the Perisher Centre with instructors and staff qualified in childcare. There is a almost flat area just outside the door used to get first-timers used to wearing skis and getting around where no other skiers or boarders are. It is a very secure area, close to indoors and pitstops.

The snowsports school also has race training and freestyle programmes. The snowsports school has three bases - Front Valley at Perisher, Blue Cow and Smiggins. The school offers masters' courses, women only instruction and various clinics to work on specific skills.

Equipment hire

Perisher Ski and Snowboard Hire is convenient to the lifts in the Main Valley.
