At 11.35pm on Wednesday 31 July 1997 about 3500 tones of rubble consisting primarily of the Bimbadeen and Carinya Lodges collapsed and slid down a water sodden hill. 17 members of Bimbadeen and 1 member of Carinya lost their lives in the slide.

There was only one survivor of the accident, Stuart Diver who was rescued after 65 hours buried in the rubble.
